Forward Together

Forward Together promotes and protects reproductive justice through organizing, building leadership capacity, developing alliances and education to achieve community and systemic change.

We believe reproductive justice will be achieved when all people have the economic, social and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about our gender, bodies and sexuality for ourselves, our families and our communities.

We are working toward the day that the culture and policies in this country support families that we have built and chosen to be strong and thrive through our Strong Families Initiative.

Internship description:

The RRASC intern will be a core part of our youth organizing team throughout Forward Together Youth's summer organizing program. Our program is made up of passionate and creative Asian young people that lead our Sex Ed the City: More than Just Protection campaign. We bring together a diverse base of high-school-aged people in Oakland for social and political action related to young people's access to sexual health resources and information. Through event planning, analyzing policy, producing videos, talking to decision-makers, and presenting in classrooms and the community, our youth leaders are bringing necessary changes to comprehensive sex education on a local, state, and national level. Through this most recent work, we have grown into a multi-gender youth organizing program that centers the experiences of queer and trans young people. Our program annually trains 60-80 Asian youth, ages 14-21 from low-income, immigrant and refugee families to be leaders in their communities and organizers for reproductive justice.

Our curriculum is designed to encourage Asian youth to develop their self-awareness and claim their inherent power to stand up for themselves, their families, and their communities for the long term. We integrate a strong race, gender, sexuality, and class analysis into our curriculum through engaging and interactive activities.

The RRASC intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in the development of political education curriculum;
  • Facilitate political education or strategy activities with youth leaders;
  • Develop a mentoring/supportive relationship with youth participants;
  • Provide logistical support to ensure a healthy and supportive environment for youth participants;
  • Bring their creative leadership skills to the development and support of the youth program;
  • Learn and grow through Forward Together's mind-body approach called Forward Stance; and
  • Be mentored and supported by experienced staff at Forward Together.

This is a great opportunity for an intern to grow their skills and experience in mentoring and leading other young people. Given that the focus for our summer program will include building awareness and skills to combat queer and trans oppression, it will be important that the intern is strong on these issues.

Please note: Due to insurance liability issues working with youth program participants, the intern will need to provide permission for Forward Together to run a completely confidential criminal background check.

Internship skills needed:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills: It will be important that the Intern feels comfortable calling and talking to youth participants on the phone, communicating via email and facebook; and, building relationships through 1 on 1 conversation;
  • Experience facilitating group discussions or activities; Familiarity with intersectional and Reproductive Justice framework: The internship will be an opportunity for the Intern to deepen and broaden their analysis however, it will be important that they have some level of familiarity (and resonance) with the core concepts of intersectionality and reproductive justice;
  • Self-sufficiency around time and project management;
  • Attention to detail and good follow-though;
  • Desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to communicate pro-actively and directly about confusion or disagreement and seek resolution with minimal conflict; and
  • Desire to learn about and cultivate a Forward Stance: Forward Together uses a mind/body technology called Forward Stance as an approach to both our internal organizational development and our external programming. Forward Stance is grounded in martial arts principles and is accessible to all bodies. However, it does require a willingness and an appetite to learn and grow through mind/body activities. Forward Together staff do Forward Stance activities together on a weekly basis.
  • Social media and communications skills are a plus.
