Empty Arms

Empty Arms Bereavement Support serves individuals and families in Western Massachusetts whose babies have died through miscarriage, stillbirth, early infant death, or termination for medical reasons. By cultivating personal connections, creating a compassionate community, and fostering professional collaborations, we provide grieving parents with valuable resources and validation as they navigate the murky days, weeks, and lifetime without their baby.

Our organization seeks to provide safe spaces where our members can escape the stigma around reproductive loss, which is in fact a normal part of reproduction. Our goal is to create safety within our communities so that members can learn to share, speak, and communicate about their losses and begin to weave those experiences into their identities. It is our hope that these skills will then transfer into the greater world.

Internship description: 

This summer we are seeking an individual who can help us to access national need for termination-for-medical reasons support and determine to what end Empty Arms can help to fill this gap. During the pandemic we have been receiving requests from all over the US to participate in our virtual groups-- and the need for TFMR support far outweighs any other.

We will be asking our intern to:

  • Determine what, if any, support is available across the country
  • Create connections and networks where possible
  • Gather resources and improve online, web-based support on the Empty Arms website
  • Explore our capacity to better support individuals on a state-wide or national level
  • Explore funding to support such an effort

Internship skills needed: 

Intern must be comfortable making phone calls, talking with people across the country on the phone, and must be able to do so in a professional manner to represent Empty Arms. A deep interest in the human experience, and in the diversity of need when trauma is experienced is a must.

Office information:

Our office is in Florence and accessible by public transportation.

COVID-19 changes:

Our staff is two half time employees. We both have had to work remotely the whole pandemic, as we both have school age children. So great flexibility has been necessary! If pandemic-wise it was possible to meet in person we would likely do so 2x per week, with the rest of the hours completed on the interns own time. Given that this is unlikely for summer 2021, if the intern was local we would likely aim to meet weekly for outdoor meetings for short periods of time. It's also fully possible for this internship to be completely remote.
