American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) - New Mexico


The ACLU-NM is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU-NM is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The ACLU works in the courts, legislature and in communities to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and civil rights laws. Our programs include legal advocacy and litigation, public education and community organizing, and legislative advocacy. Our communications and organizing team works collaboratively to create and implement creative and effective strategies to engage and mobilize supporters of reproductive health.


  • Legal and Public Policy

Internship description: 

Under the direction of the Communications Manager and the Field Organizer, the intern will assist in implementing organizing and communications components of the ACLU of New Mexico’s reproductive freedom campaign to mobilize New Mexicans across the state to work toward reducing the stigma associated with reproductive health care. They will assist with planning events, social media, supporter outreach, staffing community events (like the ABQ Pride Parade), as well as drafting and editing op-eds, blogs, and other personal and persuasive writing.

Internship skills needed: 

  • Personally committed to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, goals and programs and social justice in general.
  • Knowledge of social media strategy and digital organizing.
  • Organized, with strong attention to detail.
  • Takes initiative; able to complete projects with minimal direct supervision
  • Strong communications skills, both written and oral
  • Passion for reproductive rights, and comfortable with working in an abortion-positive environment.
  • Creative approach to communications and organizing work.
  • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Proficiency with computers: Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet research in particular.
  • Experience with digital media like making videos, graphics, etc a plus.
