International Leadership Development Meeting

Monday, April 7, 2008 - 12:00pm
Last fall, CLPP surveyed several organizations working either regionally or globally in the fields of sexual and reproductive health and rights that, like CLPP, were engaged in new leadership development. Many expressed interest in convening a small group that could share ideas and reflect on our experiences with developing and supporting new leaders and building the movement through leadership development work. After gathering information from other peer organizations and funders, CLPP invited six organizations to send staff to its annual national reproductive rights conference at Hampshire College to speak about their organizations’ work, interact with other US activists working on reproductive rights and related social justice issues, and to participate in a day-long meeting about leadership development. The meeting included Dr. Mallavarapu Prakasamma from the Asian Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW); Ghadeer Malek from the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID); Katerina Miovska from ASTRA Youth, based in Poland; Lani Blechman, Marlene Fried and Mia Kim Sullivan from CLPP; Emily Barcklow from Decidir: Coalición de Jóvenes por la Ciudadanía Sexual, based in Mexico City; Helen Chidi Kanu from Girls' Power Initiative (GPI) Nigeria; and Katie Chau from the Youth Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Rights. Participants at this intergenerational meeting worked together to identify principles and best practices for developing and supporting new leadership in the movement. Topics included:
