Organization's Mission:

The mission of Women With a Vision Inc. (WWAV) is to promote wellness and disease prevention for women and their families living at or below the poverty level through harm reduction, early intervention strategies, and referrals to appropriate community resources. WWAV’s outreach workers are the link between the streets and the community and have become the mainstay of WWAV’s success is reach at risk and socially vulnerable communities. One of WWAV’s primary strengths is its members’ dedication to building trust and relationships in the communities they work with. The women we work with are often distrustful of outsiders. In particular, African American women, who have experienced a history of exploitation at the hands of the public health system, sex workers, injection drug users, and queer communities who are especially vulnerable to stigma, law enforcement violence and incarceration.

Internship Description:

Women With a Vision is looking for interns who are sensitive to cultural, racial, economic and sexual diversity in order participate in:

  • Community organizing, coalition building and program design implementation
  • Assisting staff with development and implementation of educational trainings and organizational events
  • Assisting staff with Harm Reduction/Sexual and Reproductive Health small group sessions

Skills Needed:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of power point, page maker, and other software
  • Ability to speak in public
  • Understanding of Harm Reduction and female reproductive system preferred, but training is provided

Language Requirements:

Some Spanish preferred.

Location:

Broadmoor area of New Orleans—a middle to low income neighborhood—six minutes from the French Quarter and Central Business District. There is public transportation, but personal transportation is best. Car may be helpful.

Work Hours:

Monday-Friday, 12:00-7:00pm but may vary

Dress Code:

Casual
