NYU School Of Medicine – Reproductive Choice Service
Organization's Mission:
The mission of the Reproductive Choice Service is to provide contraception and abortion services to a diverse group of patients in New York City. The RC service is a part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU. The patients interact with a variety of medical personnel including medical students, residents, attending physicians, medical assistants, nurses and health education professionals. The RC service offers termination of pregnancy up to 24 weeks of gestation. Our service also offers a variety of contraception options including hormonal and non-hormonal methods. As part of an academic institution the RC service is involved in several clinical research projects focusing on contraception and abortion.
Many of the patients at Bellevue Hospital are new immigrants from foreign countries. The majority of our patients do not have health insurance and many do not speak English. It is our mission to provide excellent service to our patients regardless of their ability to pay.
Internship Description:
The intern will work with the RC service. He/she will have the opportunity to observe first and second trimester termination of pregnancy including intake visit, counseling, and clinical procedures including surgery. The intern will also be involved in a research project or projects of his/her choice. This involvement will include patient consent, data collection and entry and write up of the progress of the study. Current projects include adolescent knowledge of emergency contraception, post second trimester IUD placement, and HPV vaccine acceptability. The intern would also be responsible to help the health care educators with administrative tasks.
Skills Needed:
Interest in women’s health/public health. Good communication skills. Hard-working and able to take direction. Our service does termination of pregnancy through the late second trimester. Intern should be comfortable with providing these services.
