Summer Internship Program
Lilith Fund
Organization's Mission:
The Lilith Fund assists women in exercising their fundamental right to abortion by removing access barriers.
The Lilith Fund raises money to assist low-income Texan women who have made a decision to get an abortion but are devastated when they discover that they do not have sufficient funds. We disperse these funds to women in need. Many are referred to us by clinics that perform abortions. Money is not given directly to a woman but rather a voucher is sent to the abortion clinic for her to claim when she receives the abortion. The clinic then bills us. A voucher can range from $50 to $150 depending on need and cost.
Internship Description:
Many of the vouchers that we provide to clinics on behalf of clients go unclaimed and we’d like to know why. There could be multiple reasons: 1. She has decided not to have the abortion, 2. She still doesn’t have enough money to pay for the abortion, 3. She found additional money and doesn’t need our funding, etc. We would like our intern to make follow-up calls to women who have not claimed vouchers so we can find out why. This may help us modify our policies and funding guidelines.
We also need help answering our hotline, especially during the summer months when our student volunteers are not as active. Our intern would therefore attend a hotline volunteer training session and answer hotline calls at least twice/month.
Other internship responsibilities might include:
- attend fundraising events
- attend Board of Directors meetings once/month
- help with data entry of past donor gifts into GiftWorks
The Lilith Fund shares an office with Women’s Health and Family Planning of Texas and NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, so there will be opportunity to see how our three organizations work closely together.
Skills Needed:
- Excellent communication skills – especially listening with empathy to people’s experiences.
- Minimal computer skills – we have a PC in the office.
- An understanding of the issues surrounding women’s access and lack thereof to abortion. (Much has been published about limitations to access, so we can provide reading for our intern to get up to speed on these issues.)
