Christian excitedly anticipates her third year at Hampshire College, where she has friends who love her and share her interests in ghosts, kittens, and learning. Hailing from Arkansas, "X-Gon-Give-It-To-Ya" enjoys the musical stylings of Britney Spears, wearing pajama pants, and making videos that deconstruct queer assimilationist politics with chalk and blood.

Gretchen Bennett Wilson is a powerful, driven woman of action. She has been enrolled at GCC but was recently accepted at Smith College where she will become an Ada Comstock Scholar this fall. Gretchen was introduced to Hampshire's RRASC internship program and knew that this was the opportunity she had been waiting for. This internship is the beginning of her career working to fight social injustices within our society. This summer's experience will provide Gretchen with the foundation necessary to begin living her passion and doing the work that she was meant to do.

Christie loves singing, dancing, her family, and her friends. Next year, she will be studying at the University of Hamburg in Germany and hopes to travel throughout Europe. In the future, she hopes to work for women's rights, potentially as a lawyer or through policy work. Either that, or she will attend college for the rest of her life.

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Puerto Rico, Akira is an assertive, bright, ambitious young woman who enjoys the beach, traveling, and discovering the world. Currently she spends most of her time working on her Div II: “Traditions, Perceptions, and Infectious Disease: How Culture and Science Influence our Health,” as well as indulging in her passion for good food, good music, and good people. She hopes to one day pursue an MD/JD. In the meantime, she takes pleasure in living life one sunrise at a time.

The Role of the Arts: Putting Expression into Context/Using Arts to Explore Social Justice

Maria is in her fourth year at Hampshire and studies the arts as a vehicle to look at social issues. She loves boogieboarding, dancing, building bridges and is convinced that tomatoes make anything taste better. Born and raised in the Virgin Islands, some of her goals are to be fluent in Spanish and continue traveling, and she's stoked to be working with NYCLU this summer.

Anuradha's life has been equally divided between Bangladesh and America. Cyree loves the great state of New Jersey, Socrates, Queer Nationalism and Deviant Womanhood. At Hampshire, ze studies Queer Nationalism, Queers, Nationalism, and Black Studies.

Constructions, Regulation, Obstructions of Black Maternity in the U.S.

Julia only began to understand the injustice of, not just the abuse within, prisons themselves as well as the larger criminal justice system about a year and a half ago after viewing a screening of a Critical Resistance documentary about the Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. But since then she has not been able to study anything about this country that is not affected by or implicated in the Prison Industrial Complex and our ideas of criminality. Race, reproductive empowerment, and deconstructing myths for fragmenting and dominating bodies is her focus.

Amanda is a Women’s Rights Activist and a proud Feminist. She works at UMass Financial Aid, participates in the Women’s Health Project, and is also Vice President of Finance for her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She believes in a woman’s right to choose. Period. She is most concerned with issues related to HIV/AIDS education and prevention, along with healthcare reform and access, particularly in Massachusetts. She hopes to go on to medical school and eventually open a clinic that will specialize in women’s healthcare. She can’t wait to get started this summer at Ibis!

Unique is a wryter & excyter who tries to keep it hyper. What keeps her hype the most, though, is what she sees in the world she comes from and all that surrounds her. She knows that she cannot sit silent about so many of the issues that her own body represents (has silence ever benefited us before?), so for that reason, she has no choice but to act. But really, just cook up some shrimp scampi and we can chat.

Ellen Schubert

Ellen is a third-year student at Hampshire College and has been active in the reproductive justice movement since she was in high school. She's been a health educator, an intern at Sylvia Rivera Law Project, and is currently a Counselor Advocate at Hampshire. Her Division III thesis project will focus on issues in non-profit funding, and she looks forward to joining the non-profit world after she graduates.
